One-of-a-Kind Legend: The Porsche 911 Speedster Sonderwunsch Factory Creation

From Dream to Reality: The Unique Porsche 911 Speedster Sonderwunsch

Since 1954, Porsche’s Speedster variants have captivated automotive enthusiasts with their open driving pleasure and expressive dynamics. Known for their distinctive two-seat layout, unique cowl, and shortened windshield, Speedsters embody a blend of performance and elegance. Yet, one chapter remained unwritten in the 911 Speedster story: the Type 993. This gap in the brand’s illustrious history has now been filled by a bespoke creation crafted through the Sonderwunsch program—a dream come true for designer Luca Trazzi. Read below and learn more about this vehicle at Porsche of Colorado Springs in Colorado Springs, CO.

The Genesis of a Dream

Luca Trazzi, a renowned designer and passionate Porsche collector, recognized the void in his Speedster collection. He aspired to create a Type 993 911 Speedster, which never officially existed. Inspired by Ferry, Trazzi took action. He approached Porsche’s Sonderwunsch team, leading to the birth of a one-of-a-kind creation.

Bringing Trazzi’s vision to life was a meticulous journey spanning over three years. The base for this bespoke Speedster was a 1994 911 Carrera Cabriolet (Type 993). This collaboration marked the first Factory One-Off for a customer, demonstrating the possibilities of the Sonderwunsch program.

A Collaborative Masterpiece

Creating this unique Speedster was a collaborative effort between Trazzi and Porsche brand’s design experts. Alexander Fabig, Vice President of Individualization & Classic at Porsche, highlighted the project as a showcase of what’s achievable with the Sonderwunsch program.

“This one-off car shows what’s possible with our Sonderwunsch program – based on a classic Porsche 911 (Type 993) from 1994,” Fabig noted.

Grant Larson, Director of Special Projects Design, praised the creative synergy between Trazzi and the Porsche team.

“Having a designer as a customer was an exciting experience for me. Because Luca and I speak the same language, our collaboration was creative and focused,” Larson said.

Trazzi’s active involvement and specific suggestions played a crucial role in shaping the final design. The project began with exploring the Porsche brand’s archives, allowing Trazzi to gather inspiration and ideas.

Trazzi’s commitment to his vision was evident throughout the project. He visited Porsche multiple times, observing every stage of his Speedster’s development. One memorable moment was witnessing the car’s immersion in cathodic dip-painting, a process typically reserved for new cars. The unique ‘Otto Yellow’ paint, named after Trazzi’s dog, added a personal touch to the Speedster’s appearance.

A Fusion of Classic and Modern Elements

The exterior of Trazzi’s Speedster is a stunning reinterpretation of traditional Porsche Speedster elements. The rear cover and windshield feature a minimalist black frame, while the black conical exterior mirrors nod to the classic design of 1960s sports cars. The car’s bodywork, including the rear lid, was redesigned to harmonize with Trazzi’s vision.

Additionally, its 18-inch light alloy wheels painted black with contrasting yellow pinstripes, add a touch of modern sportiness. Functional design elements, such as the black stone chip protection sheets and the black door handles, enhance the Speedster’s overall look. The front spoiler, side skirts, and rear quarter panels draw inspiration from the 911 Turbo (Type 993), further emphasizing the car’s sporty aesthetic.

Inside, the Speedster showcases craftsmanship and attention to detail. The black leather interior, adorned with yellow stitching, features headrests embroidered with the Speedster logo. The checkered seat centers, tailored by hand, provide a visual highlight. Carbon fiber elements on the dashboard, center console, and gear lever add a contemporary touch, while the illuminated carbon door sill trims in ‘Otto Yellow’ offer a unique personal flair.

Furthermore, its state-of-the-art infotainment, including Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) with navigation, ensures the Speedster is equipped with modern technology. The power window switches, redesigned to feature the Speedster silhouette, and a gilded ‘One-off’ badge on the dashboard further underline the car’s exclusivity.

A Performance Legend

Under the hood, Trazzi’s Speedster boasts a powerful engine sourced from the 911 Carrera RS (Type 993). This air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine, with a displacement of 3.8 liters and 300 horsepower, delivers a thrilling driving experience. The Speedster vehicle’s drivetrain, chassis, steering, and brake system are all inspired by the 911 Carrera RS, ensuring exceptional performance.

This Factory One-Off is a testament to Porsche’s commitment to craftsmanship and individuality. Following its debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, the Speedster will return to Europe for its final customer delivery. It symbolizes what the Sonderwunsch program can achieve, blending historical reverence with modern innovation.
